History
The South Coastal Area Health Education Center (AHEC) was established in 1996 to recruit and train health professionals to practice in medically underserved areas by affiliating with a teaching hospital in the training of third and fourth year medical students and residents. The AHEC region also develops community-based training sites for health professions students to engage in clinical practice learning. The South Coastal AHEC focuses on educational opportunities for students K-12 by establishing community health education programs and promoting health careers. The AHEC provides continuing education training for area health professionals.
Mission
